Things to do in Luang Prabang, Laos
If you're not into cities due to their craziness then Luang Prabang is the city for you. It has a different vibe to normal cities. It has many cute pedestrian roads, trees along its streets, river views from most central areas and it's not that busy at all. Here's a list of the top things to do in Luang Prabang.
#1 Ride to Tad Sae Waterfalls
These beautiful waterfalls are only 15 km out of the city. Rent a motorbike for the day or opt to go on a tour. Once you reach its point you need to rent a long tail boat for 10,000kip each which gets you to the waterfalls reception where you pay 15,000kip each to enjoy any of the three waterfalls. To the second and the third there's a nice hike to get to them. Here you can also get an elephant ride for 120,000kip, feed the elephants for 5000kip or zipline for 300,000kip.
Off the beaten trek we found isolated blue lagoons which we had all to our selves. Definitely a beautiful and not too busy place to enjoy the day.
#2 Visit Kuang Si waterfalls
35km out of the city stand the most impressive emerald coloured cascades. You can opt for a tour or rent a bike and enjoy the beautiful windy road that takes you there. It is a commercialized spot with many restaurants and clothes or souvenir shops outside the place and it is frequented by many tourists who won't allow you to get time alone to enjoy the beauty of the place but it's definitely worth a visit for only 20,000kip. There's also a bear sanctuary here whom have been saved from poachers.
#3 Splurge on food at the night market
In a side street at the night market there are many stands with all kinds of food. The best part is that many of them offer all you can eat non meat buffet for only 15,000kip. You can pay extra if you fancy meat on the BBQ.
#4 Enjoy a karaoke night
One of our highlights in Luang Prabang was a karaoke night at Full Moon Karaoke. Here you can rent a private room for 300,000kip or less between you your Backpacker friends and get a free beer lao each and and enjoy the singing at the top of your voices! Definitely a fun night out.
#4 Enjoy a relaxing afternoon at Utopia
This chill out lounge is the backpackers place to be. With its chill out cushions and vibe overlooking the beautiful river view, spending an afternoon having a beer or cocktail is definitely one of the top things to do in Luang Prabang.
#5 Shop till you drop at the night market
This pedestrian colorful night market is one of a kind. It offers all type of high quality souvenirs and clothes at good prices, you are spoilt for choice which would be hard to keep on a budget.
#6 Witness the sunset
The most popular spot to witness a great sunset in Luang Prabang is Phousi hill. However after a post by a Backpacker backpackers met it doesn't meet the expectations. It's crowded with people taking selfie hence not the ideal setting. Instead we went to the Mekong 's river bank which you can find on Google maps as sunset view point. We were by the river and had the spot all to ourselves.
#5 Visit the temples in the city
There are many temples around the city most of which are free to see. The only temple you have to pay at is Wat Xien Thong overlooking the river at 20,000kip.
