5 Day Road Trip in Montenegro
With 294 km of coast line along the Adriatic coast, This Balkan country guarantees scenic routes no matter where you go. So we set off on a 5 day road trip in Montenegro, as part of our 2 month Europe Road trip.
For this Vacation in Montenegro, we entered the border through Albania, leaving Shkoder, there was only a 20 minute drive to the border. Another 45 minute drive on a single lane scenic route got us to the first rest stop, Bar. Bar is a nice place on the south coast of Montenegro where we explored the old city.
Just another 40 minutes up the coast on the E80 takes you to Sveti Stefan. This is by far the wow factor of driving on this coastal road, which forms part of the Budva Riviera. Sveti Stefan is a high end resort which hosts many celebrities, so here is only a photo stop, definitely not your actual bed for the night. Unless you can afford at least €2000 a night! But make sure to stop to take breath-taking photographs.
A 15 minute drive, then takes you to the ‘Queen of the Mediterranean’; Budva. This city is a major tourist destination in Montenegro. Budva is well known for its Riviera which hosts at least 18 beaches in a 35 km stretch. Budva has its history with its old town and is bustling with nightlife and night markets. There are so many things to do in Budva so make sure you spend a night or two.
Kotor should be your next step after Budva and is only 30 minutes away. Kotor is a beautiful town in the Bay of Kotor, surrounded by mountains and pure beauty. Its fortress is the most impressive and is most prominent at night. Kotor can be your base for a few nights to visit other nearby villages.
From Kotor one should visit Njegusi a small town renowned for its cheese and prosciutto production. The best part is that you pass from the best road Serpentine with its 25 curvy bends up the mountain to get there. From this road it’s not only amazing to drive but you get a bird-eye view of the bay.
From Njegusi there is a 30 minute drive to Lovcen National Park where you can climb the Peak of Lovcen Mountain by car all the way to the Mausoleum. The Mausoleum is like a pathway to heaven from which you can enjoy mountain views all the way till the horizon.
Once you soaked in the beauty of mountain peaks, stop for a coffee in the old capital city of Cetinje, where a rich history can be learnt. From here it 30 minutes to arrive in Rijeka Crnojevića. The M2.3, which is the road leading to Rijeka Crnojevića, has gives us the opportunity to see the full view of the curve of the river. An amazing sight, and a great place for some digitised memories (photos / videos). Here you can take a boat ride down the river and eat fresh river fish from near-by restaurants.
From Rijeka Crnojevića to Kotor is another 1 and a half hours, but if you are based there you have to get back and it was worth the day trip anyway.
This is easily the best tour in Central Montenegro.
From Kotor the next best and must stop town is that of Perast. With its Venetian architecture making it the most stunning town in the Bay of Kotor. From here it’s a must to take a boat to visit the island Our Lady of the Church, plus it’s good to see the bay from the sea.
Next stop is Herceg Novi, 44 minute away from Perast. A nice coastal town to visit its Old town. Herceg Novi is the last town before crossing the border to Croatia, meaning is only 1 hour away from the famous Dubrovnik. This crossing is also less frequented than others between Croatia and Bosnia. Plus it has the benefit of amazing roads – long and windy, and by the sea.
